Prof Rob Mairs
Banjo Tutor
Rob has been a pro musician for 30 years. He is also Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Cancer Research UK Beatson Laboratories.
An accomplished 5-string banjo player, he has recorded bluegrass (with Old Hickory), ragtime (with Banjo Cocktail) and folk-rock (with the JSD Band) and appeared on a range of festivals, TV and radio shows.
He regularly plays in North Carolina as part of a Raleigh-based old time country music band. Last year, he shared the Glasgow Concert Hall’s stage with Billy Connolly and Ralph McTell.
Rob has been teaching the banjo, dobro and guitar for 20 years. His approach is to encourage his students to play tunes rather than exercises. The method of instruction employs a combination of demonstration, recording and tablature. An ability to read conventional musical notation is not necessary. Fun is guaranteed!
